Empowering Agri-Tech Innovation in Mindanao

The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) has launched USMart TBI, a DOST-PCIEERD-funded Technology Business Incubator focused on supporting agri-tech startups in Region XII. Officially inaugurated in July 2024, USMart TBI is part of the elite 3.5% of higher education institutions in the Philippines with a functioning TBI. Its mission is to bridge innovation and entrepreneurship by guiding startups in the development and commercialization of ICT-based solutions for agriculture and food production. Startups enrolled in the incubator undergo a structured 6–9 month program, tailored to their development stage—Spark, Flicker, or Beam. Participants benefit from intensive mentoring, technical training, funding access, and linkages to government and private networks.

The TBI also fosters university-industry collaborations to promote inclusive and sustainable growth in the agri-sector. USMart TBI not only helps innovators scale ideas but also catalyzes employment and regional economic activity. Hackathons and workshops are regularly hosted to challenge and inspire student-led solutions to real-world problems. This positions USM as a dynamic player in the national innovation ecosystem, particularly for agri-technology. Through its holistic support model, USMart TBI strengthens the competitiveness of startups in Mindanao and beyond. Its efforts are directly aligned with DOST’s goal to nurture a tech-driven and resilient Philippine economy.

Supporting Startups with Purpose

At its core, USMart TBI is about empowering dreamers and changemakers to solve local problems with globally relevant technology. Whether it’s streamlining supply chains or boosting farm efficiency, USMart ensures that innovation reaches those who need it most. By focusing on agri-based solutions, it not only fuels startups but also secures food systems and uplifts rural communities. The incubator’s reach spans Soccsksargen and neighboring regions, making it a regional hub for purposeful innovation.

What Makes USMart TBI Stand Out

USMart TBI has rapidly become a cornerstone of entrepreneurial support in Southern Mindanao. Through its programs and partnerships, it creates space for students, researchers, and aspiring entrepreneurs to thrive.
